Ayşegül Yıldız

Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University

I was born in Karabuk in 1981. After completing my undergraduate education in Marmara University Biology Department in 1999, I completed my master's and doctorate education in Istanbul Technical University Molecular Biology, Genetics and Biotechnology Program in 2012. Within the scope of my master's and doctorate studies, I focused on the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration and neuroregeneration. As part of my doctoral thesis, my work with the Speedy/RINGO protein to save degenerative neurons from apoptosis was awarded in 2013 with the 37. Sedat Simavi Health Sciences Awards Honorary Mention. In 2013, I started to work as an Assistant Professor in Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics. Since then, I have continued to investigate the mechanisms by which the Speedy/RINGO protein protects neurons from the lethal effects of degeneration. As a result of the studies we have performed with my graduate students, we have taken important steps towards elucidating the mechanism of the protective effect of Speedy/RINGO in neurons. Besides, taking into account the triggering role of Speedy/RINGO protein in cancers, particularly associated with the nervous system, we have also carried out studies and shed some light on its mechanism in cancerous cells. With the results of these studies, we received the "Successful Young Scientist" award at the "10th Global Summit on Neuroscience and Neuroimmunology" conference in 2020. Our ultimate goal is to use the Speedy/RINGO protein to support treatment in neurodegenerative diseases, and for this reason, we have accelerated our studies on this subject.
